Proven operator appointed chief executive

Rural Leaders’ new chief executive comes to the role after more than 25 years working alongside farmers, growers and agribusinesses in New Zealand and offshore.

James Ryan also brings a depth of practical experience that spans consulting, environmental policy and community leadership, the organisation says.

Ryan joins Rural Leaders from consultancy firm Beca, where he led a national business focused on environmental solutions for public and private sector clients.

Before that, he was general manager of the NZ Farm Environment Trust, working closely with farmers and industry groups to lift on farm sustainability and environmental performance.

His career also includes a senior policy leadership role with DairyNZ, where he represented dairy farmers in discussions with both local and central government.

Earlier roles took him overseas, with leadership positions held in Dublin and London, giving him an international perspective on agricultural systems and regulation.

Ryan is an alumnus of the Kellogg Rural Leadership Programme and says the experience played a significant role in shaping his own leadership journey.

He is keen to see Rural Leaders continue to support people across the sector as it responds to rapid change.

He takes on the role at a time when rural industries are navigating complex environmental, economic and social pressures, alongside opportunities for innovation and growth.

Strong leadership is critical to the future success of rural communities and the wider food and fibre sector, he says.

His position is effective 23 June.
