Hawkes Bay local returns as area manager
Hawke’s Bay-based Jeremy Klingender has been appointed Barenbrug’s new area manager for the East Coast of the North Island.
He takes over from Paul Sharp, who retired in April. A fifth-generation Hawkes Bay local who grew up on Maraekakaho, Klingender brings a wealth of practical, hands-on experience to the role.
After leaving school he spent time overseas greenkeeping before returning home to work as a fencing contractor for around a decade. He then joined Wrightson in Ohakune in 2008, where skilled seed reps helped spark his strong interest in agronomy.
Klingender spent 12 years with Ravensdown, including six years delivering agronomy advice across the East Coast, followed by a period in the seed business. After a three-year break from agronomy, he’s excited to be back in the industry with Barenbrug, a company he has long admired for its exceptional genetics, professional approach, and ability to punch well above its weight.
“I’ve always respected how Barenbrug conducts itself and the quality of their products,” he says. “The genetics are outstanding, and it’s a brand I’m proud to represent.”
In his new role, Klingender will work across both red meat and dairy sectors, supporting merchants and farmers with practical advice on dryland farming, legumes, cropping rotations, and getting the most from homegrown feed.
He’s looking forward to reconnecting with familiar faces across the East Coast, including catching up at field days and events such as the recent Waipoa cadets open day.
Outside of work, he is busy with a major renovation of his 100-year-old bungalow and enjoys spending time with his grandchildren in Havelock North.
With an El Niño weather pattern forecast, Klingender says its important merchant reps and other rural professionals help farmers prepare early. “Farmers really need to have more than one plan in place,” he says. “As reps and agronomists, we play a key role in providing sound, practical guidance so farmers can make timely decisions and build resilient farm systems.”
